What I do when volunteering?

Individually, I clear trails and paths near my house that need maintenance so everyone can enjoy them. Some of the things you can do to keep trails maintained is by raking off debree and unwanted leafs or pineneeldes that have landed on the trail. This is especially crucial in seasons such as fall or winter, where leafs come down more often and accumilate on the trails. Keeping them clean means people can ride them all year around becasue the trail is visible and safe for everyone Other things you can do are cutting down small limbs or branches that are in the way of the ride. It is important to just cut the limbs of the tree rather than cutting the tree down and killing it.

Why volunteer?

When I first started mountain biking, the trails I rode were always maintained by others. As time grew on I realized that the trails became less tended to until it was up to me to make the difference. By volunteering either, by yourself or with a group this gives lots of riders opportunities to enjoy this hobby.

Where volunteer?

Volunteering can either be done alone or with an organization. In the photo above I am volunteering with trailscience.org. This is a wonderful organization around North Carolina that doesn't just maintain trails, but also makes them more fun to ride. Other organizations around North Carolina to volunteer with are: North Carolina Friends of State Park (ncfsp.org), UNC Facilities Services (facilities.unc.edu), triangleland.org and more. Feel free to contact me on my home page if you have any questions about volunteering.
